WAER staff should act professionally about format change - Letter to the Editor
To the Editor:
We would like to see an end to the controversy surrounding WAER-FM88's format change. It is time for the senior staff members to behave in the professional manner that is expected of them.
The staff should know that in professional radio, when the management decides to change the format, the employees must either accept it or leave. The employees have no say in the matter; they have no right to complain about it, and the management is not obligated to explain its actions. The staff members of WAER are fortunate in being offered the chance to work with the new format. Frequently, when the management of a radio station changes the format, it also changes the staff.
WAER Station Manager David Anderson has been working with the staff since he was hired. He has listened to their opinions and has tried to accommodate the staff as much as possible within the framework of the station's goals. But the staff members have lost sight of those goals.
WAER is not a student-controlled station, nor is its main function to supply minorities with "alternative programming." It is an educational tool above all, a facility designed to give students experience in the operation of a professional radio station. As such, it should emulate a professional radio station in all respects.
WAER is licensed to Syracuse University and should be run according to the University's judgement. We are appalled at the behavior of the senior staff. Such immaturity should not be tolerated from a group of adults.
The staff must accept the new format or be terminated. Even though WAER is a non-profit, university radio station, professional standards must be maintained in order to prepare students for the broadcast industry.
