One
of our favorite hiking places is on the west shore of Greenwood
Lake. The trail goes up the side of a "mountain" that
overlooks the lake. Beyond the peak (shown above) is a lake called
Surprise Lake.
This is probably the last hike of 1998 (November 29th.)

This time we had Grandma along. Too bad that the days are so
short. We only made it to the peak overlooking the lake and didn't
make it to Surprise Pond.


Along the way our Corps of Engineers found a spring
alongside the trail and determined that the site was an interregnal part
of the Northern New Jersey watershed, and decided to start work
immediately in order to improve the flow from the spring.
Here
Maria and Eva locate the source of the spring, coming from underneath a
bolder alongside the trail. Using a natural excavation tool,
(stick) Eva improves the path of water.
