Scott O'Grady Story
Back Home Up Next

Scott O'Grady is a pilot in the USAF who was on patrol over Bosnia in June of 1995 when his F-16 was shot down. He was rescued six days later.  Apparently, one of the people in his squadron was an eyewitness to the rescue. Scott Zobrist wrote this message, and via the "chain mail" mentality of the recipients, it seems that the message traveled the Internet in a few days.
This is probably the best evidence I have ever seen of the Internet serving as a publishing mechanism — owned by no one, available to everyone.  Without an editor, a message can be sent to a wide audience without the traditional gate keepers that control main-stream media.
Of course this issue cuts both ways.  Without an editor, it is possible that this story was fabricated and all of this amounts to a game of "telephone" where a half-truth grows to become a major lie.
I can remember feeling that this story might have been a hoax at the time I first read it, but since the Discovery Channel has produced a documentary on this rescue, I know that the originator of this mail is who he says he is, and the story he tells is true.
I have included the headers of this message to show how it was "forwarded" around the globe.  It visited major corporations, home AOL users and members of the Military.  I have removed the physical mailbox of the users to protect their identity (also to save them from being attacked by spammers who scour the Internet for e-mail addresses.)
Scroll to the bottom, to see the message, or click here to bypass the headers.

Rick,
Even if this is a cyber-hoax, it still is a pretty good yarn.

Hi guys,

This fascinating (though dubiously authentic) piece of Americana/email chain
letter arrived on my little Mac via a buddy who writes the cyberspace column
at the Orlando Sentinel. It's too neat not to pass on. THIS is why I'm an
Internet Evangelist...;) Even if it's NOT true, it's cool. I bet everyone
with an email address has this by the end of the week...!
