Promontory Point, UT

In 1869 the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific Railroad finally decided connect their railroad at Promontory Point, Utah.  They actually built a few miles of track past each other (yep, they were paid by the mile.)

The National Park Service has recreated the locomotives that were present, and they sit on the site so all can see.

Here Anna and Bill reenact a famous scene from American History:

We got there late and they already put one of the engines away.  We got to see the Jupiter engine pull back to it's barn (warning - the video is a big file - don't try the link unless you have a fast modem)

The next day we drove to the Great Salt Lake for a swim.  It is kind of gross because the only thing that lives in the lake are Brine Shrimp and flies love them.
So there are clouds of flies around the edge of the lake.  Once you brave them and get into the water, it has the consistency of weak soup.  If you sit down in it, you can float.  No treading water.  Just sit down like in an easy chair and relax.  Pretty incredible.
